DIY Tutorial & Decor: How to Build the Perfect (and Comfortable) Pallet Garden Lounge
The pallet garden lounge has become one of the most popular DIY outdoor projects. Affordable, eco-friendly, endlessly customisable — but often ruined on one crucial point: comfort. A pallet sofa without the right cushions is decoration you don't actually use. This guide takes you from A to Z: choosing pallets, preparing the wood, assembly, cushions, colours and maintenance.
1. Choosing your pallets: the foundation
The right format: EPAL pallet (120x80 cm)
The standard European pallet measures 120 × 80 cm — exactly matching standard outdoor cushion dimensions. No cutting, no adapting.
- HT marking (Heat Treated): thermal treatment, no chemicals — the only one recommended for home use
- Avoid MB marking (methyl bromide): chemical treatment
- Check the wood: no cracked planks, no blackening, no strong chemical smell
2. Preparing and assembling the structure
Sanding and treatment
Sanding is the step everyone wants to skip. Start with 60–80 grit, finish with 120 grit. If pallets stay outside permanently, apply a wood stain or marine varnish.
How many pallets for a complete sofa?
| Configuration | Seat pallets | Back pallets |
|---|---|---|
| 2-seater sofa | 2 (stacked) | 1 flat |
| 3-seater sofa | 3 (stacked) | 1–2 flat |
| Corner sofa | 4–5 | 2 |
Two stacked EPAL pallets give around 30 cm — add a 12–15 cm seat cushion and you reach 42–45 cm, standard sofa height.
3. Comfort: the mistake everyone makes
Filling that holds over time
For a 120x80 cm seat, choose a cushion with high-resilience (HR) foam flake filling. Ideal thickness: 12 to 15 cm.
Outdoor fabric: three non-negotiable criteria
Our pallet cushions use 180 g/m² Oxford fabric, water-repellent treated: water repellency, UV resistance, breathability. Plus the essential practical criterion: removable cover, machine washable at 30°C.
Our cushions are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified.

4. Complete lounge dimensions
| Element | Recommended cushion |
|---|---|
| Sofa seat | 120×80 cm, 12–15 cm thick |
| Backrest | 120×40 cm |
| Corner | 80×80 cm |
5. Style and decor: creating a coherent atmosphere
- Bohemian chic: terracotta + off-white + green plants
- Modern minimalism: anthracite grey or sand beige
- Natural and Scandinavian: linen, ecru, sage
Rule: no more than two main colours for seat cushions. Add accent colours only on decorative cushions.
- Our floor cushions for informal extra seating
- Our sunlounger mattresses for coordinated terraces
6. Care and lifespan
- Turn cushions regularly for even wear
- Don't leave on wet pallets for extended periods
- Off-season: store in breathable bag, never airtight plastic
A well-maintained pallet garden lounge easily lasts 5 to 7 seasons.
FAQ
How much does a DIY pallet garden lounge cost?
Between €50 and €200 depending on whether you source pallets for free or buy them new. Cushions represent 60–70% of the budget — don't cut corners there.
Can pallets stay outside all year?
Yes, with proper treatment (wood stain, marine varnish). Without it, wood cracks and degrades in 2–3 seasons.
Are reclaimed pallets safe?
Only HT-marked ones (heat treated). Avoid MB (methyl bromide) and unidentifiable markings. When in doubt, buy new pallets.
Should pallets be screwed together?
For a permanent lounge, yes — a few screws in the uprights is enough. For a seasonal setup, leave them free.
Which cushion colour won't go out of style?
Sand beige, natural linen and light grey are safe bets. For a lasting investment, choose a neutral base and add colour through easy-to-change accessories.
Can indoor sofa cushions be used on a pallet?
Only for a few weeks per season. Indoor cushions don't resist moisture or UV. A proper outdoor cushion (180 g/m² Oxford fabric, HR foam) is essential for regular use.
All our pallet cushions come in 120x80 cm with matching backrests — OEKO-TEX certified 180 g/m² Oxford fabric, removable cover, multiple colours. Complete your terrace with our garden lounge cushions.
